"Bison Valley" natural reserve - Vama Buzaului

This is Romania’s youngest bison reserve (since November 2008) and currently has only eleven bison an seven deer.

The Valea Zimbrilor (Bison Valley) reserve was opened in late 2007 and the first European bisons were brought from Italy, Austria and Switzerland. It is the fourth European bison reserve in Romania after the ones in the Counties of Hunedoara (central Romania), Neamt (eastern Romania) and Dambovita (southern Romania).

The Valea Zimbrilor reserve covers a 100 ha area, 80 ha of woods and 20 ha of pasture. 

Vama Buzaului is an agricultural community about an hour southeast of Brasov (50 km). This bucolic hamlet, whose traditional farmhouses stretch back from the road to gently rolling hills and a pine forest, is the ultimate in agrotourism.
In several places, a small river crosses the single road through Vama Buzaului, banked with grassy areas and trees (and blissfully free of any traces of garbage). Although the river is too shallow for swimming, it’s the perfect place to dangle your legs in the cool clear water, relax with a picnic on a blanket, and read a book. No traffic, no loud music.
The mountains surrounding Vama Buzaului are full of hiking trails from easy to moderate difficulty. The hills are wooded pine, and most trails cross fresh springs. These hillsides are also home to a large bear population, so use caution.
